Command basics
What the command bar is, and the four steps every command goes through.
The command bar runs an operation across many records at once. It exists for the jobs that are otherwise an afternoon of clicking, or a request to somebody else that takes a week to come back.
The shape of a command
A verb, a record type, and a filter:
find part where lifecycle = 'released' and mass is nullexport part where project = 'HALO6' --format xlsxcompare bom 8383838 9399393 --level all
That's the whole grammar. Everything else is a variation on it.
It always previews first
- You type the command.
- It resolves to a set and shows you the count and the matching rows.
- You read what it proposes to do to each one.
- Nothing happens until you confirm.
There is no way to skip step three. A command that would change two thousand records shows you the two thousand before it touches any of them.
Where to find it
The command bar is available from the Command screen, and from the keyboard anywhere in the vault. If you can't see it, your role may not include it — see What a command cannot do.
