Lifecycle states

What WIP, In Review, Released and Obsolete each mean in practice.

Every revision sits in a lifecycle state. The state controls who can edit it and whether the rest of the business should be acting on it.

StateMeansEditable?
WIPWork in progress. Being designed. Not to be built or bought against.Yes, by whoever holds it
In ReviewSubmitted for approval. Waiting on reviewers. No — locked during review
ReleasedApproved and current. Safe to build, buy and quote against. No — needs a change order
ObsoleteWithdrawn. Kept for history; must not be used on new work.No

What the state actually enforces

Your states may differ

WIP and Released always exist. Your company may have added others — Pending Approval, Pilot, Production — as part of its workflow.
